A leading Tory politician was left red-faced after confusing "Brexit" with "breakfast".

Welsh Conservative leader Andrew Davies made the embarrassing gaffe when addressing today’s Tory Party conference in Birmingham.

Mr Davies had attempted to cap his speech by echoing Theresa May’s earlier catchphrase of “Brexit means Brexit and we’re going to make a success of it”.

Opening his final remark, Mr Davies said: “Conference, mark my words.

“We will make breakfast, Brexit, a success.

The room then erupted with laughter as Mr Davies attempted to cover his tracks.

He added: "Now that's word that wasn't meant to come out like that was it!" he said. "I'll have a word with the autocue at the back."

As clips of Mr Davies' mistake surfaced, people took to social media to poke fun at the MP.

Brian Griffin tweeted: "Brexit means breakfast, at last we know, but what about brunch?"

Remy Chavannes added: "Finally a realistic Brexit epromise, that focuses on what Britain does best."

After the conference, Mr Davies even joined in on the joke himself.

He wrote: "Speech done at #CPC16... now off to sort out breakfast."
