Tory MP Jacob Rees-Mogg entertained a BBC audience with a quick-witted comeback after a barb about his privileged upbringing.

The backbencher was the butt of a joke by Question Time host David Dimbleby during an appearance on the current affairs show last night.

During a debate on airport expansion, and the possibility of a third runway at Heathrow, Mr Rees-Mogg said: "I used to live not a million miles from Slough, with the aeroplanes going over, and I must confess they didn't prove too bothersome then".

Mr Dimbleby then interrupted, asking: "Eton, was that?" in a reference to the MP's time at the prestigious private school in Windsor.

"That's absolutely right," replied Mr Rees-Mogg, triggering laughter among the audience.

After a short pause, he turned to Mr Dimbleby and added: "I was at school with your son".

Fellow guest Piers Morgan hailed the comeback, shouting "boom" and adding of Mr Dimbleby: "That's the best thing I've seen him take in a long time."

Mr Dimbleby's son, Henry, to whom Mr Rees-Mogg referred, is now a chef and co-founded food outlet Leon.
