Tony Blair has laughed off an attempt to place him under citizen's arrest as he dined in a Shoreditch restaurant with his family last week.

The former Prime Minister entered into a debate on the Syrian conflict after being targeted by a 'staff member' at the upmarket Tramshed steakhouse in east London on Friday night.

Vigilante Twiggy Garcia invited Mr Blair to accompany him to a police station, explaining to him that the arrest was a result of "your decision to launch an unprovoked war against Iraq."

Speaking to CNN last night, Mr Blair appeared relaxed about the incident, which is the fifth attempted arrest he has been subjected to.

Asked if the episodes bother him, he laughed and said: "No they don't, because I am aware of these decisions, having taken them in government, and they are extremely difficult.

"If you intervene - as we did and removed on any basis a brutal dictator in Saddam who was responsible for hundreds of thousands of people dying - you end up with a very difficult set of consequences you have got to face up to.

"But if you don't intervene, as we see in Syria today, we are also facing very difficult consequences."

Mr Garcia told this week how Mr Blair had "kept changing the subject" when confronted about Iraq. One of his sons then reportedly called security, at which point the restaurant worker quit on the spot and fled the scene.

A spokesman for Tony Blair's office insisted the group had a "great time" at the restaurant despite the arrest attempt.
