MPs given cash advances to pay staff

MPs received expenses worth £277,000 in the past eight weeks, with a further £171,000 given in loans, new figures showed today.

The newly created Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority revealed that 93 MPs had applied for and been granted loans to tide them over in paying for staff and other costs.

There were also cash advances on salaries to 168 MPs worth £644,000. The body, which has been much criticised by politicians for its bureaucracy and delays, said that as of this week every MP and their staff had now been paid.
