A maverick MP could be suspended from the Liberal Democrats after “serious allegations” were made about his conduct towards a woman.

Lib-Dem leader Nick Clegg confirmed he had begun disciplinary proceedings against Mike Hancock in relation to the claims, which the Portsmouth MP denies.

Legal papers for a civil action against Mr Hancock relating to the alleged incident in 2009 have been filed at the High Court, Mr Clegg said. Speaking on LBC radio this morning, he stressed police had looked at the case and not taken further action and said he was not prejudging the court’s decision.

But he went on: “You’ve got to react when allegations of this seriousness are made, you can’t just sit there on your hands.”
