After speculation that Jeremy Corbyn’s party could snatch Conservative strongholds such as Wandsworth and Westminster, it was not able to win enough votes.

Even Barnet – considered to be likely to go to Labour after the resignation of a Tory councillor in March – was held by the Tories in a crushing defeat for Mr Corbyn’s party.

It did, however, gain control of Tower Hamlets in the last result declared in the early hours of Saturday.

It was a better day for the Liberal Democrats, which gained Richmond upon Thames and Kingston upon Thames from the Conservatives and held onto Sutton.

With all London boroughs declared, these are the results:
