Labour mayoral hopeful Tessa Jowell today announced she would create a “one zone weekend ticket” so Londoners could travel across the whole city on Saturdays and Sundays for the price of a zone one single fare.

The former minister pledged to freeze fares for the first year if elected to City Hall, as research showed Londoners have spent almost a third of their pay-rises of the last four years on travelling around the capital.

Between 2010 and 2014 average earnings increased by £1,079, a three per cent increase, while an annual zone one to four travelcard went up £328, a 22 per cent increase.

Dame Tessa also plans to bring in a one-hour bus ticket allowing passengers to change buses without paying a second fare.

Her Labour rival, Tooting MP Sadiq Khan, today announced plans to amend the Government’s right-to-buy bill to make sure no social housing can be sold off until a replacement is built first.

Aides suggested the move would be “strongly supported” by MPs and peers.

It comes as Respect party leader George Galloway formally launched his mayoral campaign, pledging to make the housing crisis his first priority and to clamp down on “social cleansing” in the capital.
