Labour has dropped its investigation into Dame Margeret Hodge, following claims she allegedly shouted at party leader Jeremy Corbyn over anti-Semitism.

The party announced on Monday that no further action would be taken against the backbench MP.

Dame Margeret said she was “pleased” the investigation had “finally” been dropped.

General secretary Jennie Formby has written to the MP ending the inquiry into alleged abusive behaviour and informing her that no further action will be taken.

It is understood the decision comes after Dame Margaret expressed her regret to the chief whip Nick Brown for the manner in which she had voiced her views.

Writing on Twitter, she welcomed the decision, but insisted there had been no apologies on either side.

Dame Margaret, who is herself half Jewish, tweeted: “I'm pleased that the Labour Party has finally dropped their 'action' against me.

“After 55 years of LP membership going after me instead of addressing the issue was wrong. In 2018 anti-Semitism that has again reared its ugly head and the campaign against it goes on.

"The Labour Party must adopt the IHRA definition in full to start to rebuild trust. Thanks to everyone for kind messages of support which have kept me going."

Jeremy Corbyn has issued a Twitter apology for anti-Semitism within Labour

He admitted there was a real problem of anti-Semitic views being expressed within the party, saying they have no place within Labour.

Those who deny there is a problem are actually adding to it, the Labour leader said.

In the video message he said: "I'm sorry for the hurt that has been caused to many Jewish people"

He added: "People who use anti-Semitic poison need to understand: You do not do it in my name, or the name of my party. You are not our supporters."
