An online fundraising campaign in honour of murdered MP Jo Cox has passed the £1 million mark.

The campaign, set up in the wake of her death on Thursday, has amassed more than 30,000 separate donations in just three days.

Within minutes of being set up on Friday it had sailed past £10,000 and hit the half-million mark the next day – making it the UK’s largest and fastest-growing crowdfunding campaign ever.

It reached £1 million in donations shortly before 8.30pm today.

A single white rose and a scarlet bloom were placed on the empty green bench where she usually sat in the chamber.

Hundreds of bouquets of flowers have been laid in tribute to the MP in Westminster, near to the scene of the killing in Birstall and on Mrs Cox's house boat in Wapping.

Following the news the fundraising campaign reached the milestone, her husband Brendan Cox tweeted: "Thank you to everyone for your incredible generosity. This will change lives in Syria, Batley and across the UK."

The most recent comment posted by her London friends who set up the GoFundMe page reads: “Wow – a million pounds has been raised in Jo's honour in just three days thanks to you all. She would be so proud.

"The scale and speed of the public response to this fund has been overwhelming and deeply gratifying to all of us. It shows how powerfully Jo’s story has moved so many.

"A huge, huge thank you to every single one of you who has given so generously and been in touch with so many kind messages.

"As you can imagine it may take us some time to get back to you all but we are reading everything and extend our heartfelt thanks."

Money raised will go to three charities chosen by Mrs Cox's family that were close to the MP's heart - the Royal Voluntary Service in West Yorkshire, Hope not Hate and the White Helmets.

Launched on Friday, the page also included husband Brendan's tribute, which stated: "Jo believed in a better world and she fought for it every day of her life with an energy, and a zest for life that would exhaust most people."

Today, Thomas Mair, 52, from Birstall appeared at the Old Bailey charged with murder, grievous bodily harm, and firearms offences following the death of Mrs Cox.
