A furious Brexit voter has confronted Tim Farron over the EU during a campaign trail visit which descended into chaos.

The angry 65-year-old began yelling at the Lib Dem leader in a heated stand-off as the two disagreed over the UK’s vote to leave the EU.

Brexiteer Malcolm Baker greeted pro-Remain campaigner Mr Farron during a visit to Oxfordshire on Wednesday before shouting at him: “I hope you get beat, I hope you only get six seats.”

In the exchange in Kidlington, Mr Baker hit out at the way some Leave voters were portrayed in the wake of the EU referendum including the suggestion that “they did not know what they were voting for”.

Mr Baker said: “We did know. I voted leave, and I’m proud to have voted and I knew what I was voting for.”

Argument: Lib Dem leader Tim Farron clashes with Brexit voter Malcolm Baker.

Mr Farron replied: “Have you got grandchildren? Are you proud that they will inherit a poorer, less powerful, less secure country?”

Mr Baker said: “I’m proud that they are going to be coming out of Europe and that we will have our own destiny and not have people telling us we’re gonna pay £100 billion to get out.

“If that’s your policies I hope you get beat, I hope you only get six seats.”

The angry pensioner storms off before shouting to the crowd: “I tell you what, I’ve always voted Labour but I’ll be voting for Theresa May.

He then turns to the camera and says: “My name’s Malcolm, Malcolm Baker. And I’ll tell you what, I’m fed up of hearing this chap keeping on, running Britain down. We are a fantastic company [sic].”

He adds that it is his birthday today and, at the age of 65, he has always voted Labour.

A Lib Dem source later pointed out that the pair shook hands after the meeting.

The Liberal Democrats backed the Remain campaign and promise that, if elected, they would try “at the very minimum” to remain a member of the EU’s Single Market.

Mr Baker’s comments follow claims of a divide between Leave and Remain voters. Many in the pro-Leave camp have in the past claimed that Remainers have tried to paint Brexit voters as racist or unaware of what the consequences of a Leave vote would be.

After the video was posted online, many people began making jokes online including wishing Mr Baker a happy birthday.

Others reacted to his views, with one person calling for him to stand as an MP.
