A huge roll-out of wind turbines in back gardens and solar panels on roofs is at the heart of the Green Party's manifesto for London.

The party would give "micro-renewables" permitted development status to encourage homeowners and businesses to generate their own power. This means they could be built without planning permission.

It also wants £20 billion of public investment in big wind, wave and solar power projects so Britain could get half its energy from renewables by 2020.

Green London Assembly member Darren Johnson said: "Environmental concerns can no longer be seen as an abstract luxury."

The party also pledged to: *Build a new generation of high quality, energy-efficient council homes. *Provide free personal and nursing care for all older people. *Set up local health centres providing services in addition to GP surgeries. *Encourage walking and cycling by cutting speed limits to 20mph in built-up areas. *Double the investment in out-of-school services such as drama and sport to help address youth crime.
