Culture Secretary Maria Miller is defending her department’s budget “tooth and nail” and is refusing to agree any cash cuts, it was reported today.

Ms Miller believes the Treasury fails to understand the role of arts and culture in the economy and has yet to offer any cuts despite being ordered to slash 10 per cent, according to the Financial Times. Her stand comes as speculation mounts that her department might be scrapped.

Other ministers opposing cuts to their departments include Business Secretary Vince Cable. Environment Secretary Owen Paterson and Home Secretary Theresa May have also not made cuts.
