Boris Johnson faced a parliamentary probe today into whether he “covered up” parts of a damning report into toxic air near London’s primary schools.

The Commons environmental audit committee is expected to demand answers from the former mayor over why the whole of the study — which showed that 433 primary schools in 2010 were in districts where nitrogen dioxide levels breached EU limits — was not made public.

Committee chairwoman, Labour MP Mary Creagh, said: “Parents and teachers alike will be mystified that the threat to their children’s health was not fully disclosed.”

Mayor Sadiq Khan said he could not understand why the full study had not been published when it was completed more than two and a half years ago.

Aides to Mr Johnson pointed out he made a major speech last year in which he referred to the figures. His spokesman added: “Mr Johnson never hid the impact of air pollution from Londoners.”
