Paddy Ashdown’s hat, Maggie Simpson and Wikipedia vandalism were among the memes to take the web by storm over an extraordinary election night.

The former Liberal Democrat leader announced he would "publicly eat my hat" if an exit poll forecasting 46 losses for his party came true - which it did.

Within minutes of his claim to the BBC, a foul-mouthed Twitter account was set up for the notional hat and picked up more than 12,000 followers.

Even the person responsible seemed amazed and slightly concerned by the account's sudden popularity, tweeting "I hope you all f***ing voted" after the total passed 10,000.

The annihilation of Labour in Scotland, with the SNP picking up 56 seats, prompted striking comparisons with Maggie Simpson after political maps of the UK took on a very yellow hue above the border.

Scotland was also in the spotlight for election meme hunters after the BBC transmitted a potentially offensive misspelling of one constituency.

The defeat of Labour big-hitter Ed Balls was met with gleeful imitations of his famously self-indulgent Twitter gaffe by some.

David Cameron's Wikipedia page was briefly altered to include a huge photo of arch rival Ed Miliband and the words "vote Labour", though the attack clearly had little impact.

Back on the theme of Lib Dem struggles, Vince Cable's promise his party will "bounce back" - after the former Business Secretary lost his Twickenham seat to the Conservatives - reminded some of another public figure who has overcome adversity.
