The drive to cut welfare costs has seen the benefits of 3,200 London households capped so far.

Officials released figures relating to the four London pilot boroughs as they prepare to implement the benefits cap across the capital at the end of the month.

Between April, when the pilots were launched, and the end of July 200 households in Bromley were capped, 630 in Croydon, 1,500 in Enfield and 830 in Haringey.

Tory Enfield North MP Nick De Bois said: “In Enfield we are seeing people who received benefits return to jobs.” The cap limits benefits to £26,000-a-year for couples and lone parents, and £18,200 for single people without children. Tottenham Labour MP David Lammy claimed the cap was hitting people who genuinely needed support.
