Pictures: on the campaign trail with candidates in the run-up to the crunch Mayoral vote

1/16

The London mayoral election contest draws to a close today as voters head to polling stations to cast their ballots.

The winning candidate will take the place of outgoing Mayor Boris Johnson, who has held the post since 2008. A final poll had Sadiq Khan poised to make history by becoming London's first Muslim mayor.

The 10 candidates have been photographed all over the capital canvassing for votes as well as clashing at different hustings.

Here we take a look at some of the photographic highlights in the run-up to the vote, which include Sadiq Khan launching his new campaign poster, and rival Zac Goldsmith posing in front of his own battle bus in Chiswick.

Other highlights include: Green Party candidate Sian Berry launching her manifesto for Black, Asian and Minority ethnic backgrounds (BAME) in Newham, Liberal Democrat candidate Caroline Pidgeon sitting on a bike while pledging more space for cyclists on the capital’s roads, and Ukip candidate Peter Whittle having a chuckle with voters in New Addington.

Mr Khan and Mr Goldsmith are considered to be the front runners in the race, with a recent YouGov poll giving the Labour candidate a 16-point lead over his main rival.
