“Working on mayor bid”: Labour MP Diane Abbott

Outspoken MP Diane Abbott will tomorrow confirm she plans to join the race to become Mayor of London.

She will end weeks of speculation by saying that she will formally declare her intention to stand after next May’s general election.

In a speech at the London Labour party conference tomorrow, Ms Abbott, MP for Hackney and Stoke Newington, is expected to say: “Now is not the time for a formal declaration. But I am certainly planning to run to become Labour’s candidate to replace Boris Johnson and I am working on my bid.”

Shadow justice secretary Sadiq Khan, another expected Labour candidate, will today give a speech saying that he wants to make London the “world capital for black and ethnic minority achievement”.

Tottenham MP David Lammy and transport expert Christian Wolmar are the only two candidates to have officially declared that they will run.

Last week, Labour MP Tessa Jowell confirmed she intended to declare her candidacy at a later date.
