Boris Johnson puts up £300,000 to help high streets

Boris Johnson today backed plans by retail expert Mary Portas to breathe new life into struggling high streets.

The Mayor announced a £300,000 fund to boost jobs and growth in three town centres across London.

Local communities will be invited to submit ideas to get the money. Mr Johnson will select the successful high streets this summer. Those ideas which most transform town centres affected by the economic downturn are likely to win the competition.

The fund is separate from the existing £1.2 million government scheme, which last week was awarded to Croydon town centre, set ablaze by rioters last summer.

The so-called Portas pilots will each receive £100,000 to carry out some of the recommendations made by the Queen of Shops in her review for ministers.

Mr Johnson said: “I’m looking forward to receiving some innovative ideas which will help lead the way in steering London out of recession.”
