Nigella Lawson has confessed that she turned to chocolate in the aftermath of her messy divorce. Now rival domestic goddess and occasional actress Gwyneth Paltrow has revealed that she also likes to indulge, but rather differently.
Her much-derided lifestyle website, goop, released a new series of tips yesterday, entitled Warming Winter Detox, including a recipe for a hot chocolate that would cost £38 to make from scratch.
“You know we love a good detox here at goop,” writes Paltrow, “and this January is no exception. We created detox recipes that won’t leave you feeling cold and lonely.” Her comforting concoctions avoid any dairy, gluten, sugar, caffeine, alcohol and all the other unhealthy extras which have, the Londoner assumes, been a staple of Lawson’s recovery.
Paltrow’s peppermint hot chocolate is made with unsweetened almond milk, mint flavoured liquid chlorophyll, spirulina powder, two tablespoons of raw cocoa and a pinch of pink Himalayan sea salt. The Londoner went first to Waitrose and, since they had no chlorophyll or spirulina, trekked over to Holland & Barrett. Add in the “optional chocolate-flavoured protein of your choice” and the total ingredients will set you back £38.
Paltrow has been defiant against those who criticise goop for being unworldly. “Part of the problem is people get a hit of energy when they are negative about something,” she has said. “They don’t understand why they do not have a happy life. I feel sorry for them.”
Chocolate expert Nick Crean, head of Prestat, takes issue with Paltrow’s recipe. “We believe hot chocolate should be thoroughly indulgent. It’s not a chemistry class.”
