Traditionally, the British do self-mockery and the Americans don’t get it but it’s hard to imagine any of our PMs pulling off the tongue-in-cheek skit President Obama performed at the weekend at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.

Among jokes about Piers Morgan — “they replaced the popular Larry King with one of the scheming footmen from Downton Abbey” — the President also sported his wife’s fringe in a mocked-up photo, joking that the cut might give him energy. And in a pre-recorded sketch he pretended to be Daniel Day-Lewis playing Obama in a Spielberg movie. The closest Mr Cameron’s got to engaging in the cultural zeitgeist is appearing in One Direction’s Red Nose Day video. Maybe he will take tips from President Day-Lewis.
