The name’s Bond, social conscience Bond

The Guardian’s slew of spying scoops, from NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden to today’s revelations that previous G20 delegates had their phones bugged by GCHQ, has inspired a popular new hashtag — #guardianbond.

A super-spy with a social conscience, this version of Bond shoots the bad guy then “makes sure he picks up the cartridges and takes them to the nearest recycling station”.

Suggested titles include “From Russia with a renewed respect for Communism” and “From Rusbridger With Love,” while Goldfinger’s famous quip is reimagined as “No, Mr Bond, I expect you to be burdened by post-colonial guilt.”

Even Guardian editor-in-chief Alan Rusbridger is amused. Despite being the target of much of the ribbing, he claims to be “enjoying #guardianbond”.
