Whereas a new Pope is likely to be sworn in before Easter, American diplomacy seems to move more mysteriously than the Vatican. There is still no news on the identity of the next US ambassador to London.

Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour was tipped for the post but it is thought President Obama’s fundraiser Matthew Barzun is now more likely to land the job. So when will we find out? “It could be any time,” says a US Embassy spokesman.
