A man high up in the London private members’ club scene tapped me on the shoulder and said: “Have you heard 5 Hertford Street got a one-star rating from a food hygiene inspection?” Robin Birley’s club in Mayfair opened 18 months ago and has been so popular that it is no surprise rivals are crowing about its misfortune.

The inspection was in September during a kitchen refurbishment. One problem was placing raw fish in the wrong places in the fridge. “We requested a re-inspection from Westminster city council shortly after the initial visit and are now awaiting this,” says a spokesman, confident the problem is fixed.

The Londoner is pretty confident, too, that Birley, who cares deeply about food, will have sorted this out and will be keeping its lunch reservation there next week.
