Poetry in motion thanks to Padel

The weather at London Zoo’s Tropical Aviary seldom lives up to its name but last night at Ruth Padel’s talk on exotic birds, the audience was able to sit outside enjoying the balmy evening.

As part of her series of Writers’ Talks at the Zoo, the poet brought to life the world of amethyst starlings, ruby-throated hummingbirds and bleeding heart doves.

“I grew up in a household where nature seemed aligned to writing,” said Padel, explaining how she had developed a passion for conservation.

“The natural world is just like a poem. Everything is interdependent and alert to everything else.”
