No passage to India for Enoch Powell

Writer Dominic Shelmerdine, compiler of a book of ambitions, says Mrs Thatcher wrote to tell him about her career intentions.

“My original ambition was to join the Indian Civil Service but my father said, all too presciently as it turned out, that by the time I was ready to join it the Indian Service would probably no longer exist,” she wrote in March 1997. Enoch Powell wanted to be Viceroy of India but he had a similar problem.
