Nancy Dell’Olio’s blessing is a tonic for the Pope

Nancy Dell’Olio has given her support to the newly elected Pope Francis. “He’s a great choice,” she tells me. “My first impression from his TV appearance is that he is strong and emotional. I think he’s already conquered everyone.

“It’s the first time they’ve elected a Jesuit and Jesuits are quite straight. But I hope that as Pope he’ll be more flexible, because there are certain issues — like adoption and gay marriage — that the Catholic Church needs to reconsider.”

The lawyer and old flame of former England football boss Sven-Goran Eriksson doubts the new Pope, an Argentinian, will take a position on the Falklands. “Now he has a new life and his home is in Rome.”
