Musicals must feel fresh pain

Stephen Ward and From Here to Eternity, the recent musicals from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice respectively, both closed after lacklustre reviews. Producer Cameron Mackintosh considers the pair’s failure as a case of old dogs failing to learn new tricks.

“Their subject matters didn’t have a contemporary relevance,” he tells this month’s Where London magazine. Mackintosh points to the strong box office for his revival of Miss Saigon. “It’s as if history has caught up with Les Misérables and Miss Saigon,” he said.

“The scenes are exactly what you see in the media, whether it’s the revolution that’s taking place in Ukraine, war-torn Afghanistan, or children in Syria who have no home and no chance.” Whatever next — Crimea: The Musical?
