Mitt finds money can’t buy you lunch

Chairing an LSE panel on the US elections last night, Justin Webb introduced himself: “I’m a presenter on the Today programme. We ask difficult questions of our bosses. We used to ask difficult questions of others but we’ve kind of given up on that.”

He revealed that Romney owed him money. “At the 2008 Iowa Ladies’ Caucus, he was ahead of me in the queue to buy food. When he opened his wallet, all he had were $100 bills — I knew then he’d never be President. I ended up buying him and his wife, Ann, a sandwich.”

When Webb was the BBC’s chief correspondent in the US, he often travelled the Mid West. “Wherever I went, people fell in love with my accent. ‘Gee,’ they’d say, ‘say that again.’ I spent my time impersonating Hugh Grant . . . though not in every respect.”
