London appears to be have been struck down this week by celebrity amnesia. First director Edgar Wright confused Monica Lewinsky for a half-forgotten colleague and now Mary Beard confesses to being unable to recognise the stars before her eyes.

The classicist was recently at the National Theatre watching Helen McCrory as bunny-boiler par excellence Medea, but admits to suffering “an academic moment” during the play. Sitting next to McCrory’s husband, Homeland star Damian Lewis, she politely asked him: “What do you do?”

Don’t worry, Mary, we can lend you the box sets.
