Marking Eric Hobsbawm’s class

1 May 2013

Marxist historian Eric Hobsbawm used to say of living in Hampstead “If you’re in a ship that’s going down you might as well travel first class”. How fitting that his legacy promises to be first class too. Following his memorial service last week, Birkbeck College has announced the launch of the Hobsbawm Scholarships.

“When Eric was awarded the Balzan Prize in 2003 dedicated to European history since 1900 he donated part of it to cover ongoing research, and it is this spirit of directly funding brilliant academic ideas and endeavour in modern history which we wish the Hobsbawm Scholarships to continue,” says Professor David Latchman.

“We hope that a grassroots movement of students and readers around the world will support this initiative.”
