London's oldest theatre hosts gala for its newest

More than £100,000 was raised at a gala hosted by Sir Ian McKellen at the Globe on Friday for Finsbury Park’s Park Theatre. Among guests were Sir Tom Stoppard, Benedict Cumberbatch , Stephen Daldry and Romola Garai.

McKellen donated a copy of The Hobbit signed by all the film cast and director Peter Jackson which was auctioned for £10,000. “We’re here underneath the Globe theatre, the oldest theatre in the country, and we’re celebrating the arrival of the latest theatre in London,” said McKellen. “It’s very suitable.”
