Londoner's Diary: No Dancing in the Seats at Motown the Musical

Those booking tickets to see Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? at the Harold Pinter Theatre are advised to eat beforehand, as the tense scenes and dramatic pauses could be interrupted by the crackle of a crisp packet. But theatregoers up the street, at The Shaftesbury Theatre, must fall in line with a more rigid rulebook.

Motown The Musical traces the origins of the much-loved genre. But it seems that some have been enjoying it a little too much: last night, playwright and screenwriter Tanika Gupta was among the crowds and tweeted a sign in the toilets. “Attention all budding Dianas & Smokeys,” it reads. “We know you can sing but please refrain from doing so until directed by the cast or on your way home! Oh, and we would like to point out, it’s Dancing in the Streets, not dancing in your seats. So please do not be offended if we ask you to moderate your ‘enthusiasm’.”

Stevie Wonder might call them Uptight.
