Labour and the JK Rowling sleight of hand

Hats off to JK Rowling for duping the literary world and writing a “debut” novel, The Cuckoo’s Calling, under the pseudonym of Robert Galbraith. But many are puzzled as to how the story got out.

The book had sold only 1,500 copies since its release in April and had gone largely ignored in the literary world. Would the Sunday Times have had the time and money to carry out comparative studies of pseudonymous authors without being given a steer?

Labour high command will be privately thrilled that Rowling “outed” herself. In light of the prospect of dwindling union money, any profits from her pen name could end up in party coffers. Famously, she gave Labour £1 million in 2008. Let buyers of her books beware: buy Rowling, get Miliband.
