Jimmy Savile waxwork melted down and portrait airbrushed from history

A waxwork of Jimmy Savile at Madame Tussauds has been melted down.

It was created in 1986 at the height of his fame and was displayed in the London exhibition.

An artwork of the disgraced late TV presenter is also being returned.

Macmillan Cancer Charity auctioned a painting of the television presenter by artist Hugh Mendes last month as part of its high-profile De’Longhi auction.

Savile had been associated with the charity so it seemed appropriate for Mendes, who has in the past sold work to Jerry Hall, to let the work go under the hammer for such a worthy cause.

What a difference a month makes. The buyer, who paid £400 for the picture, has now had second thoughts and asked Macmillan to take the picture back, though has insisted that Macmillan keep the money. “At least Jimmy’s still raising money from the grave,” noted Mendes, wryly.
