South London pop band Bastille sang their single Pompeii at a press preview at the British Museum last week. But first they were shown around the new exhibition, Life and Death in Pompeii and Herculaneum.

The sculpture of Pan having his way with a nanny goat lying on her back, which shocked Victorian viewers when it was discovered, was explained from a safe distance in the next room. “It’s a beautiful work of art and not at all shocking,” said the guide. “Because, of course, goats don’t have sex lying on their backs.”
