Bosnian conflict remembered with regrets

To Lancaster House, and a sombre commemoration for the victims of the Srebrenica massacre. It was hosted last night by former BBC correspondent Martin Bell and included moving testimony from four massacre survivors. Eric Pickles, the Communities Secretary (who called General Mladic “Mladen”) spoke, as did Baroness Warsi, who described the commemoration as a “healing” event for her and the Foreign Secretary, William Hague.

Paddy Ashdown, former High Representative in Bosnia, declared the situation now was worse than when he left six years before. Among the guests at the reception afterwards was former Foreign Secretary Douglas Hurd, who attracted criticism during the conflict for his support of the arms embargo on the Bosnian government as well as Serb forces.

Would he do things differently?

“Yes … everyone made mistakes” was as near as he came last night to admitting he got it wrong on Bosnia.
