Astonishing scenes at the National’s Lyttelton Theatre delayed Alan Bennett’s new play People last night. Two men entered into an an unseemly scuffle as they wriggled for room in adjoining seats.

A contretemps ensued between the elderly American and the younger, larger gentleman, who suggested “taking it outside”.

Theatregoers intervened while awaiting security.

“Is this part of the show?” asked a bemused bystander.

It isn’t just airlines that can’t cope with a bulging population.
