6 February 2014

After all these years, is it not time to move on from Chris Bryant and his underpants? Perhaps to another internet faux pas.

“Dear Friend, I’m really sorry,” writes the shadow minister for welfare reform, again behind his laptop. “You have just had an invite to my book launch — and I very much hope you can come — but sadly a slip of the mouse meant that instead of being BCC’ed, everyone was CC’ed. Bad form ’n’ all. And very unfortunate, especially as some have now gone through the list of email addresses and said, ‘Well, if he’s going....’”

On the list, actor Russell Tovey, classicist Mary Beard and an M Gatiss, whom one can only hope is Sherlock writer and star Mark.

“Mea maxima culpa,” the grovel continues. “PS, do come — there will be gin.” The book is called Parliament: The Biography and launches in the House of Commons. On April 1.
