AL Kennedy: from leotards to a low profile

20 February 2014

The deference and pampering heaped on authors at literary festivals is “bizarre,” says the novelist AL Kennedy. “More and more writers are asked to do these ‘A chance to meet’ events. Why would you want to meet me?” said Kennedy at the Radisson-Blu Edwardian hotel in Bloomsbury, speaking at the Hidden Prologues literary salon. “People who know me don’t want to meet me.”

She also thought her experiences as a former drama student had prepared her well for reading.

“I used to do interpretative dance performances in a leotard, in a car park, in Coventry. Stuff like that makes being a novelist a breeze.”
