A welcome festive cheque comes in for the Lib-Dems

17 December 2013

An early Christmas present has arrived for Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg. According to the new register of MPs’ financial interests, the Lib-Dem leader has recently accepted a £30,000 donation from businessman Anthony Ullmann.

The gift, Clegg’s first for a long time, will come in the form of 20 donations of £1,500 per month ending in May 2015, just before the next general election.

In 2012, Clegg said he wanted to take “big money” donations out of politics in order to put a stop to the idea that individuals can buy influence. Could Ullmann have persuaded him to change his mind? Or is £30,000 considered chicken-feed by Mr Clegg?
