American ambassador Louis Susman and his wife Marjorie attended the launch of Jill Shaw Ruddock’s Second Half Centre, the charity for the over-50s, in north Kensington.

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said he hopes to live to over 100 and, quoting Bette Davis, declared: “There are three ages of man: youth, middle age, and ‘my word you look so well!’”

Actress Diana Quick added: “I plan to die in harness. That’s the wonderful thing about a job like mine — you can work to the end.” Louis Susman could not confirm or deny whether President Obama’s fundraiser, Matthew Barzun, has beaten Anna Wintour in becoming his successor.

His advice for the next American posted to London? “Have a great time.”
