Pity the FT staffer tasked with writing up Rona Fairhead’s appointment as chair of the BBC Trust. Fairhead, who replaces Lord Patten after a lengthy recruitment process, was chief executive of the Financial Times — part of the Pearson group — until leaving in 2013. Her £1.15 million pay-off and £3.1 million in share options triggered a shareholder revolt at the Pearson AGM, with more than a third of shareholders objecting. The FT mentions this in its otherwise glowing write-up of Fairhead’s appointment. But leaves it until the final paragraph.
