Culture minister Ed Vaizey certainly takes his brief seriously. On Sunday he attended the closing night of Knackerman, a bawdy whodunnit at the White Bear Theatre Club in Kennington.

Vaizey enjoyed a pint at the working men’s club and chatted with the locals before sitting through the two-hour performance — no mean feat given that the air conditioning at the venue had packed up.

When asked if he’d enjoyed his visit to the London fringe, he commented that it wasn’t the first time he had been. “I’ve taken my tie off,” he told one punter, “so I must be having a good time.”
