A new app will transport music fans through a virtual reality tour of the legendary Abbey Road music studios made famous by the Beatles.

Over the years, the studios been used by some of the biggest names in music, including Oasis, Adele and rapper Kanye West, alongside recording scores for films like Star Wars and Harry Potter.

Now the Inside Abbey Road app allows people to take a virtual walk around places which are not accesible to the public, including the drum room at Studio 3, the space where Amy Winehouse and Tony Bennett recorded some of their biggest hits.

By opening the door of Studio 1, users can also sit in on a surround sound recording by the London Symphony Orchestra.

In another part of the building, mastering suites will demonstrate how records are given their finishing tweaks by engineers before they go on sale.

It also includes a guide to the St John's Wood venue's history from Giles Martin, son of Beatles producer Sir George.

The app is a collaboration between the studios and Google Play, updated from a version released last year to use the company's Cardboard virtual reality viewer.

Mr Martin, a producer in his own right who has worked with Sir Paul McCartney, said: "Abbey Road Studios has been a hive of creativity and source of world-class recordings for more than 80 years.

"The artists using the studios have sold countless millions of records and have helped create popular culture as we know it today. It's an inspirational place and an honour for me to work there today.

"This collaboration with Google gives the outside world a great insight into the everyday workings of the studio and allows anyone to glimpse the magic that goes on inside the world's most famous recording studio."

Studio managing director Isabel Garvey said: "With this incredible virtual reality technology, music lovers will be fully immersed in the sights and sounds of Abbey Road in a way we never could have imagined."
