A workman was reportedly “set alight” after cutting through a power cable at a building site in central London.

The man was working at a building being refurbished in Fitzrovia when he cut through a power cable and caught fire, the BBC reported.

The man was rushed to hospital by London Air Ambulance to be treated for burns.

Two other men were also treated at the scene, and one was later taken to hospital with minor burns.

London Fire Brigade said they were called to the scene, on Bourlet Close, just after 11am on Tuesday.

A LFB spokeswoman said: “Two fire engines and 10 firefighters and officers were called to reports of a fire at a building under refurbishment on Bourlet Close, Fitzrovia, this morning.

“A small part of the ground floor of the four-storey building was damaged by fire.

“Three men were treated at the scene by the London Ambulance Service.”

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called today at 11am to Riding House Street, Westminster to reports of an incident.

“We sent an ambulance crew, two single responders in cars and our Hazardous Area Response Team to the scene. London’s Air Ambulance was also dispatched.

“We assessed a total of three patients at the scene. One man was treated for burns and was taken to hospital by air ambulance.

"Another man was treated for minor burns and was also taken to hospital by road ambulance. The third patient – a man – was assessed at the scene but wasn’t taken to hospital.”
