A woman has been rushed to hospital with serious head injuries after she was hit by a piece of falling scaffolding in central London.

Police and paramedics were called just before 7pm after the woman was hit by a falling object in Rathbone Place, just off Tottenham Court Road.

A spokeswoman for London Ambulance Service said the woman was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital as a priority.

Firefighters were also dispatched to the scene, at the junction with Percy Street.

The road, in one of London's busiest shopping areas, was closed while emergency services dealt with the incident.

A Metropolitan Police Service spokeswoman said: "A woman was injured after scaffolding fell.

"LAS and LFB attended and the road was closed while the incident was dealt with.

"Her injuries are not life threatening."

A spokeswoman for LAS added "We were called at 6.56pm to reports of a person hit by a falling object.

"A paramedic on a bicycle, a single responder in a car, an ambulance crew, and an incident response officer attended.

"We treated a woman at the scene for head injuries and took her as a priority to hospital."
