Wimbledon weather: Grey start forecast for tennis championship with risk of rain disrupting play

Wimbledon is set for a grey start with thundery showers threatening to disrupt play during the tournament's early stages.

Spectators will enjoy warm temperatures of up to 24C on Monday but there is a risk of rain as the tournament gets under way in south-west London, the Met Office said.

Referees will also be paying close attention to the forecast for Thursday, when thundery showers could disrupt afternoon and evening play.

Met Office forecaster Craig Snell said on Sunday: "Tomorrow morning, we start off in London fairly grey and there could be some spits and spots of rain first thing.

"But I think by the time play gets under way that should be gone.

"At the moment, it looks like there is a small chance for a couple of hours in the afternoon of a few showers around the Wimbledon area."

But Mr Snell said there is a "low risk" of play being interrupted - good news for defending champion Sir Andy Murray who will take on lucky loser Alexander Bublik on Centre Court.

Tuesday and Wednesday will see a mixture of a cloud and sunny spells at the tournament, however thundery showers are expected on Thursday when temperatures could hit 27C (81F).

Mr Snell said: "On Thursday there is a greater chance of seeing some thundery showers moving into the south-east.

"They are showers, so it doesn't mean Wimbledon is going to see rain. But if it does see showers, they will possibly be fairly hefty."

Sunny spells should return on Friday - a brighter and fresher day for players and those hoping to catch a glimpse of the action.

Mr Snell said: "All in all, it doesn't look too bad of a first week for Wimbledon."
