Wimbledon flooding: Mains pipe burst still affecting 400 people

Sebastian Mann4 July 2016

Hundreds of people are still waiting for their water supply to return to normal after a pipe burst flooded a major south London street.

Up to 400 are said to be affected more than 24 hours after Kingston Road in South Wimbledon was plunged under water on Sunday morning.

It means they may struggle to take showers or use their taps for drinking water, Thames Water confirmed.

The utilities supplier said: “All our customers affected by the burst pipe on Kingston Road, now have their water back although some at slightly lower pressure than normal.

“We expect all supplies to be back to normal later this afternoon but in the meantime bottled water is available on Kingston Road at the junction with Southey Road and at the Priory Retail Park.”

Police and firefighters warned members of the public to stay away from large parts of South Wimbledon on Sunday as emergency services tried to drain the 100m area between Southey Road and Merton High Street. Firefighters were first called shortly after 11am.

Today resident Jo Rodgers posted on Twitter: "19 hours without water and counting. @thameswater had major water main burst on Kingston Road."

And yesterday Joanna Cater told the Wimbledon Guardian: "I live on Montague Road and I have no water, the whole street has no water.

"Kingston road is like a river. It's crazy."
