Firefighters descended on Waterloo after a blaze broke out within metres of the Imax cinema.

Flames ravaged bushes in the middle of the busy roundabout as thick grey smoke could be seen billowing into the air.

The fire brigade took 54 calls about the incident and sent two fire engines to the scene just before 10am on Tuesday.

It was quickly brought under control and did not spread to the Imax or nearby buildings.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Firefighters were called to bushes alight outside the Imax cinema at the Waterloo roundabout this morning.

“The Brigade's 999 control officers took a total of 54 calls to the visible blaze.

"Two fire engines from Lambeth fire station attended the scene.”
