High earner: Paul Martin

A London council boss has been handed a pay package worth nearly £90,000 more than the Prime Minister's £142,500 salary.

Wandsworth council chief executive Paul Martin has been handed a £20,000 pay rise year on year, getting £230,440 in pay and bonuses.

Figures published in the local authority's annual report also show £43,784 in pension contributions received by Mr Martin in 2012/13 - bringing his total remuneration package to more than £274,000.

The huge pay package was brought to light at the borough's council meeting on Wednesday night, with accounts also showing 29 council officers and seven teachers being paid more than £100,000 per year.

Tory-run Wandsworth council said Mr Martin's pay package did not represent a year on year increase because his earnings had been understated in accounts for the previous year.

The borough's Labour opposition leader Rex Osborne told the Sunday Times: "The people of Wandsworth should know that their council tax is going on the absurdly high pay of senior staff while everything else is just being cut."

Wandsworth's spending cuts have seen spending on lollipop school crossing patrols and meals on wheels slashed.

The borough also controversially bulldozed playing equipment and introduced £20 charges for children to use a tree-top adventure course run by leisure firm Go Ape - prompting accusations it was putting play facilities out of reach of less well off families.

A spokesman for the council said pay was tied to performance levels and success in meeting targets, adding: "We have one of the highest residents' satisfaction approval ratings of any town hall in the country, our council tax is half the London average and has been the lowest in the whole UK for the past 20 years."
